Eling Tide Mill Experience

A day out at the Eling Tide Mill Experience has something to offer for everyone.

The Grade II* listed Eling Tide Mill, which has stood at the centre of life in Eling for centuries, is one of only a handful of working tide mills left in the UK. The Eling Tide Mill, its gift shop, adjacent Visitor Centre, Mill Café and the surrounding riverside walks, combine to form The Eling Tide Mill Experience.

Visitors can step back in time and enjoy learning about the workings of the newly restored mill and discover how the tide is harnessed to power the centuries old machinery to grind wheat into flour. The mills mesmerizing machinery can be seen in full glorious action through glazed panels. A large interactive screen provides videos to explain how the mill operates in addition to live camera links to the mills upper floors. Children can dress in costumes from a bye-gone era.

The mills fascinating story and history continues in the Discovery Room where interactive displays include opportunities for visitors of all ages to get hands on with quern stones and a working model of a tide mill.

Wholemeal and brown flour, freshly milled on site, is available to buy in the mills gift shop or can be enjoyed in some of our breads and cakes in Mill Café along with lots of other delicious menu choices.

The gift shop also has a wide range of gifts and locally sourced products that make an ideal memento of your day.

A program of activities includes family events, drop in and explore events, wildlife watch groups, interesting talks and mini professor sessions, check out the website to find out when these are available.

Fully accessible paths and boardwalks enable everyone access to the wildlife and plant life in these areas of special scientific interest as they enjoy walks around the mill pond (Bartley Water) and to Goatee Beach. The water surrounding the mill are also full of crabs creating hours of fishing fun for children (you can buy this from the toll hut).
