6 June - D-Day 80 Beacon Lighting

Notification of road closures

This year, the UK commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 and as part of the special events and activities taking place in the City, Southampton will participate in the National Beacon Initiative, orchestrated by Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR.

This will include an 80th-anniversary D-Day international beacon, set to be lit in the evening at the British Normandy Memorial, overlooking Gold Beach.
Additional beacons will also be positioned in Utah, Omaha, Juno, and Sword, all within Normandy, France.

The Southampton beacon will be lit in Guildhall Square on the evening on Thursday 6 June, marking the culmination of a military parade.

There will be some temporary road closures around Guildhall Square between approx. 20:00hrs - 20:30hrs to allow the Parade to march from Holyrood Church in the High Street and into the Square.

Notification of road closures

Throughout June 2024 you will see Southampton's Guildhall Square transformed into a buzzing live music hub welcoming artists from across the globe to form the highly anticipated 'TK Maxx Presents Southampton Summer Sessions'.

You can view the confirmed dates and full line up on the Summer Sessions web page here.

On each concert date, there will be temporary road closures around the Square on West Marlands Road, Commercial Road by the City Art Gallery / Library and Above Bar Street.
