Summer of Discovery

Located in the heart of Southampton, SeaCity Museum is the city’s port of call for stories of maritime history and life. Exhibitions share tales of the people of the city, their fascinating lives, and our historic connections with the Titanic and the sea.

Learn from interactive activity areas, highly visual displays and memorable real-life accounts. The popular exhibitions will transport you back to the Titanic’s fateful voyage, reveal thousands of years of our port’s lively and diverse history, and uncover the city’s past with local archaeology and archives.

Current exhibitions

Kurt Jackson’s – Biodiversity
27 May 2022 - 29 Oct 2022
An exhibition of paintings, found objects and sculptures by Jackson, made in locations across the UK, including the New Forest and south coast, and reflect the specific biodiversity in each area. This new body of work focuses on the vital interdependence of the lifeforms and landscapes which make up our environment.

Lisa Traxler – Time Traveller
2 Jul 2022 - 8 Oct 2022
In 2020 Lisa Traxler was awarded first place in Southampton City Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition with her sculpture, ‘Time Traveller – Voyager’ which was inspired by a painting from Southampton’s Maritime and Local History Collection ‘Approach to the New World (Olympic)’ by artist Norman Wilkinson. Taking her winning entry as a reference point, history and architecture collide in this exhibition to create an immersive landscape within the gallery setting.

2022 Open Exhibition
2 Jul 2022 - 10 Sep 2022
For this year’s biennial ‘open exhibition’, artists from across the region were invited to respond to the question ‘What does culture mean to you?’
Southampton recently reached the final four in its bid to become UK City of Culture in 2025, which galvanised artistic and cultural activity across the city and wider region. We want to explore and celebrate what culture means to everyone across the region in all its vibrant and diverse forms.
The final selection was made by a judging panel and includes prizes for painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, and new media.
