Woodmill Outdoor Activity Centre is proud to bring you ‘Woodmill Rodeo’ a moving water event on Saturday 29th June 2019. Woodmill is the only place in the UK that boasts four different types of water. With a placid water lake, flowing River Itchen, tidal estuary and some thrill ride white water at low tide for kayaking & canoeing.
This makes it a fantastic location for paddle sport, with all abilities and adventures suited perfectly for a Rodeo.
Freestyle kayaking is a whitewater discipline and competitions take place on stationary river features (like Woodmill weir). These can be breaking or partially breaking standing waves, holes and stoppers typically formed at the bottom of small drops or weirs where the water flows back on itself.
**What can you expect?**
Starting with a race on a variety of different crafts such as: white-water kayaks, Sea kayaks, sit on tops, wild-water boats and canoes. The race will start in the ancient salmon pool, contestants will have to navigate their way around markers weaving in and out of the flow. The course consists of 5 buoys which the paddler must touch with their paddle before they can move on. Each contestant will have the opportunity to complete one practice lap and a timed lap. Prizes for the podium finishers!
Secondly a white-water freestyle rodeo on Woodmill weir (the only moving water feature for 80 miles) this will be split in to 3 different age groups. Freestyle is a constantly evolving discipline, with new tricks being developed to complement and improve on existing moves. These moves fall into three categories, entry moves, basic moves and bonuses, and are similar to those performed in freestyle snowboarding, surfing and skating. Spins, flips and turns are accompanied with names including cartwheel, front loop and space godzilla. The freestyle section will be broken down into 3 age ranges 8-15years 16-20years and 21+, this section is for experienced paddlers only. Each contestant will be judge on 3, 45 second runs.
