Hampshire & The New World: Exploration & Empire 1500-1750 by Dr Cheryl Butler, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society

From the early days of fishing in Newfoundland, through early explorations funded by privateering and led by Humphrey Gilbert and Walter Raleigh, to the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers and The Great Fleet. From witch trails in Salem to debtors shipped out to Georgia, for 250 years Hampshire and the port of Southampton was in the forefront of travel to the New World.
