Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a technique to facilitate behaviour change that uses a guiding/reflective style to engage with patients, clarify their strengths and aspirations, and utilise their own motivations for change, and promote shared decision making.
It has been shown:
By placing greater importance on the patient’s autonomy, MI techniques out perform traditional advice-giving in terms of improving health behaviours and adherence to recommendations.
Effects persist even when MI is used in brief consultations - such as the few minutes in the clinic setting.
MI is easily adapted for use by all health care professionals and non-clinicians, such as local patient and peer support groups.
We are delighted to have the same team expertly led by Jan Procter-King from Etal Training, to deliver the training.
The day will give you insight into the skills of motivational interviewing for use in everyday practice which will be useful during the 2 to 10 minutes you have with someone in clinic to help them make changes. It could be weight loss/gain, physical activity or even just taking their mediation.
The study day is suitable for anyone interacting/involved with patients young or old. This includes the multidisciplinary team, commissioners, representatives of patient groups, service leads and NHS decision makers.
It is informal and focused on giving you practical tools you can use immediately.
There is a nominal fee of £50 to attend (to include refreshments and lunch) - but the skills learnt will be priceless!!
