Almost 400 years ago, on 16 September 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, UK, to voyage to America, known to English explorers at the time as the New World. But its history and story start long before that and on 15 August 1620, the Mayflower and another ship, the Speedwell, left Southampton and began this historic voyage.
More than 30 million people can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew aboard the Mayflower when it landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts, in the harsh winter of 1620.
Andy Skinner will present the fascinating story of the Mayflower, as well as some extra Southampton history following 1620, including the story of Isaac Watts and the clock chimes still heard to this day in the city.
