Father's Day: Make the most of Southampton waterways experiences

From paddling to the pub and a steamship jazz cruise around to Solent to Titanic meanderings and lunch with a view, Visit Southampton has picked its favourite Father’s Day suggestions:

Historic meanderings and a sea feast with a marina view

Southampton’s luxurious Ocean Village Marina is the perfect spot to dine alfresco and take in the yachts and visiting cruise ships. This pretty waterfront has an impressive historic backstory which dates to Roman times and features the Mayflower, Titanic and modern day cruise lines.

History-loving dads can peek into the past at the SeaCity Museum. Alternatively, they can download the museum’s free Titanic Trail and enjoy a 75-minute self-guided walking tour taking in the key locations in and around the waterfront and city, which provide a fascinating backstory to the ship, its passengers and crew. Complete the experience with a waterside lunch with a view. The Harbour Hotel and Spa has two equally impressive options this Father’s Day. For a bird’s eye perspective of the Solent there’s the HarBAR on 6th, while dads’ with a penchant for seafood will be impressed with The Jetty restaurant’s waterside location and seafood menu options. Paddle to the Pub

Located beside Southampton’s river Itchen, Active Nation’s Woodmill Activity Centre offers an ideal Father’s Day treat – a leisurely Paddle to the Pub’ round-trip to The White Swan pub. From the comfort of a sit-on-top or tandem kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard, equipment can be hired by the hour. The paddle to the pub experience requires a couple of hours hire, or for a longer adventure make an afternoon of it. Rentals start from £14 per hour for a single seater kayak. Father’s Day Jazz Cruise aboard Britain’s largest working steamship the SS Shieldhall

SS Shieldhalls Father’s Day Cruise combines live jazz, the golden age of steam and trip around the Solent. A member of the National Historic Fleet, the SS Shieldhall is a fabulous working steamship and, as well as seeing the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work, dads can join the captain on the bridge and admire the traditional instruments and gleaming brass work. There’s also plenty of time to sit on deck and listen to the Shieldhall Stompers Jazz Band, take in the onboard commentary and relax with a bottle of local ‘Titanic’ brew beer from the saloon. The 4hr30 Father’s Day cruise runs from 14.30 -19.00 hrs. Prices from £99 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 under 16yrs); adults £43 and children £13. Under 3years are free. Book here.
