Eat and drink alfresco

A new pilot scheme has been launched in the Bedford Place area for an initial six months, as part of the Southampton Inside Out initiative which aims to create more outdoor dining space in the city centre.

Three areas of road on Bedford Place/Carlton Place and Lower Banister Street have been pedestrianised and outdoor seating has been installed. By opening up these areas it supports local businesses, helps to facilitate social distancing measures and hopefully improves your experience when visiting the area.

Why not head down and support your local businesses by grabbing a bite to eat or something drink outside? You can find out more about the initiative, including planned pilot schemes, here.

Bedford Place painted bollards Nathan Evans

To support the outdoor dining pilot scheme, a number of bollards were installed into the area as a safety measure. Solent Showcase Gallery, Solent University and GO! Southampton have bought to life these bollards by commissioning a number of local artists to get creative and give them a makeover.

There are sevens sets of bollards around the area - next time you are visiting try and find them all and take a look at their unique designs.
